We are a small group of model railroaders living in and around the Amish country
of southeastern Pennsylvania. As such, we are in what might be considered the historical
railroad capitol of the U.S. Within a stones throw is the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania,
the Strasburg Railroad, and the Train Collectors Association Toy Train Museum. Just a tad
further, is the York Fairgrounds, home of TCAs annual get-togethers. Within a 90-minute
drive, we can also visit Steamtown U.S.A> in Scranton, PA and the B&O Railroad Museum
in Baltimore, MD - and, if that were not enough, within 2 hours we can do research at
the SMithsonian or Library of Congress in Washington, DC. It would be hard to find
too many other places as rich in information and photo ops then here.
We also rely on the memories and experiences of our colleagues. One of our officers,
a senior citizen, grew up in Chicago in the steam era and recounts the locomotives
chugging along a low embankment next to the ballfield across from his elementary
school on their way to the Sears main office warehouse about a quarter mile down
the track. |
